Single target DPS?

I consider myself knowledgeable about what I am doing which is completely due to the den and practice. So i know my rotation (which is simple due to my build) and i recognize that affliction would bring me better DPS, but I am enjoying this build currently.

Question is, I am seeing people that do not have the gear for the DPS numbers they say they are putting up. I do not see the possibility for single target DPS being up in the 3500 to 5600 range.

When I test my DPS, I pick *A* boss or high HP trash or level 82 target dummy and go to town ignoring adds and ignoring SoC and Hellfire and not dotting up all the other trash then concentrating on my main target.
Its in this way that i hit 2200 dps in most heroics.

If i wanted to, I could just spam SoC instead of SB and get over 3k DPS.

Am i wrong in testing my dps this way? There is only one build currently that can out DPS mine, and in every test i've seen only does so by about 400 DPS. This I've seen by looking at WWS and noticing that yes, they are only DPSing the boss, or one of the trash.

Re: Single target DPS?

AoE damage is all well and good, but can vary +/- 50% depending on:

- how many mobs
- how fast they die
- how soon you started casting

I generally ignore AoE damage and focus instead on single-target DPS. Ideally during a tank-n-spank boss fight where the mob lives for at least a minute.

Re: Single target DPS?

i generally don't count dps on trash as real dps, for many reasons:
-mobs die too fast
-there's multiple mobs
-AoE inflates DPS by A LOT
-You don't miss as much on trash (until your capped, then you never miss now)

So, I only count the dps on bosses, and generally those that are single target and don't require much but tank and spank. Easiest way to really measure dps is to use the training dummies (prefferably the boss one for accuracy). You can really concentrate on what you're doing and go all out and not care about any boss abilities. Also, when you use the training dummies, always do multipe tests to rule out human mistake.

Re: Single target DPS?

Also consider that DPS numbers in 5 man instances, 10 man raids and 25 man raids is going to be vastly different. In 25 man raids, you will have a much larger pool of buffs to work with that do some very nice things to your DPS. In a 5 man, or on a target dummy, you see much different numbers than in a raid. I'm only in Naxx 10 so far, but I don't see anywhere near those numbers either. Don't worry, you are doing nothing wrong. If you are doing 2200 DPS, you are doing just fine.
