A more powerful spell is already active??
Ok, I cannot seem to replicate this but this is the basic scenario: Fighting an elite so its a longer fight. Dot him up: Haunt, Siphon Life, Corruption, Curse of Agony. VW is gonna lose aggro so I'm going to refresh my dots. I see the message "a more powerful spell is already active" or something very similar. I just cannot figure out what's causing it. I'm getting hammered so I can't look around too much or I'm dead. I also didn't notice anything strange in the combat logs. Any suggestions?

Example: Send in VW. Pop Icon of the Silver Crescent - Item - World of Warcraft, cast UA, Corruption etc. If I attempt to renew UA or Corruption before they expire, I will get a message that "a more powerful spell is already active" since I had initially applied it with the +158 spell power from the Icon active. |

Re: A more powerful spell is already active??
I don't recall this ever happening in BC. This must be a new mechanic since I'm still using the Icon I'm refreshing the DOTS so I can start to focus on drain-tanking in hopes that a full set of dot durations and my draining can take down the mob before I die. I wonder if this is supposed to happen. I should be able to refresh a dot and cancel out a prior one if I want..the game shouldnt restrict me.

Re: A more powerful spell is already active??
This has been around forever. Basically the game won't allow you to put up a corruption at say 1500sp if you have one ticking on the target at 1650sp. As posted above, the most common situations for this are on-use trinkets or item procs that give you a temporary boost to spell power. In most situations this isn't an issue, given that affliction locks don't want to clip DoT ticks, but yes, it can be less than ideal in some situations.

Ok. Just never noticed it before Wrath of the Lich King. Odd. Oh well. Thanks for the replies.

Re: A more powerful spell is already active??
Did you recently add a macro to constantly fire your trinket? or have you recently added it to the rotatio? or most important, did you not have (or didn't use) a spell power trinket through most of BC? You'll never encounter the error if you don't have anything causing a short term increase in spell power like that - note that demonic pact or demonic empathy could cause a like effect; as would a shaman totem if you move out of range of it during a boss fight. Maj edit - forgot about Haunt, as I'm not aff spec (see below).

Re: A more powerful spell is already active??
The reason you are seeing the message is when you reapply Haunt it is refreshing your corruption spell and adding 20% damage for 12 seconds. Therefore when you refresh your dots Corruption doesn't need to be reapplyed until your 3rd round of dots. If you aren't using a dot timer I reccommend using xperl UI which gives you a numberical countdown on dots or you can use dottimer or timerbutton addons. |
