Improved Howl of Terror

I was wondering how some of you have used, are plan to use, this spell. It seems to me like an armageddon type of spell that either presents an escape clause or a prelude to a coup de grace.

As an escape clause, the hope would be that the fear would last long enough on each mob to allow a clean getaway, especially if the mob is of the type to do a speed reduction on successful strikes. Because I assume that like Fear, returning mobs will be zero'ing in on the warlock. (I can Fear an add on a tank and pretty much ensure that I'm tanking him when he gets back. :p )

As a coup prelude, I was thinking of a situation where a party has picked up too many adds, and the tank is about to go down. Sure, the VW can throw in a Suffering (which it seems to do whenever it's up, even against a single mob :x ), which just means that every mob other than the one the tank has been beating on now focuses on rapidly reducing the VW to demonic goo. I thought that to make the best of this situation, since one is going to lose the VW anyway, and then likely the tank next, the warlock could toss in a howl, granting the tank some relief, wait until the mobs are zeroing back in, this time on the warlock, then sacrifice the VW. With the mobs now clustered around the warlock, even if they've picked up friends along the way, he now lets loose with Hellfire.

Except for the above two situations, and the second is premised on a high taunt factor in fearing a mob, I really don't see this spell getting too much more use otherwise.

Howl of Terror!

You can right click on auto-casting spells to stop them from auto-casting. I don't know why Suffering is auto-cast.

I can't wait to get this. It's great for when you're in a zone full of roaming mobs where you often get unexpected adds that you just can't or don't want to handle. Howl and run

Howl of Terror!

Thanks Gladmancer, I didn't know about the right-click for autocast spells! Though I must admit, with my pet tormenting and suffering the mobs, I almost have to work sometimes to steal aggro, which is really not that bad a thing. ;)

Howl of Terror!

Question though, based on an observation:

I used sacrifice in a situation where three black ravagers had set on my VW and were about to make me the appetizer. It shielded me from damage, but they were still able to stun me for a few seconds...?

I didn't know that special effects could still be effective while the caster was benefitting from a Sacrifice. Is this working as intended, or was that a bug?

Howl of Terror!

I think it's as intented. It only absorbs damage, not any effects. I'd imagine you could still be cursed or maybe even DoT'ed after sacrificing.

Howl of Terror!

Ok thanks, I guess it's just physical damage that we're being shielded against. But it does last for a long 30 seconds, so that's not bad at all...

Howl of Terror!

Actually it only lasts until 30 seconds has passed or it has absorbed x amount of damage. It absorbs any form of damage as well I believe.

Howl of Terror nerfed for PvE?

I searched and didn't see any posts on this, so I felt inclined to warn everyone.

Did anyone else hear anything about this coming? I didn't see it in any of the patch notes and I looked around but to no avail. Howl of Terror now only fears targets for 8 seconds... including PvE. Thats what the text says now. Its not 15 seconds with a hearbeat resist check or anything... its 8 seconds max. Psychic Scream was reduced to 8 seconds as well for priests. And single target fear was reduced from 30 seconds max to 20 seconds (even though it never lasted that long anyway). I never saw anything about this coming.

We were doing Rajaxx fight with our normal fear bomb rotations, but we were getting owned WAY more than normal and couldn't figure out why until one of our locks pointed out that they had changed HoT.

Did anyone else not know about this change? because I know I sure didn't.
