Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

When I first started playing last year, a friend of mine recommended that I use a "damage meter". I got online and DL'd an addon called (creatively) "Damage Meter". It made a little red box on my screen which I immediately minimized and didn't use until I got to level 70 in The Burning Crusade. I didn't really understand what "DPS" was until I got to 70, I was just trying to level.

So I've been using that addon until recently when someone asked for a DPS report and I linked mine and someone else linked theirs and there was a difference in the numbers (tho the ranking was the same). The other person used "Recount" which I've since been told is the defacto standard in DPS meters. After the ensuing argument and accusations I switched to Recount, just to check it out.

But at this point I'm wondering if one is better than the other? Why do the two meters give different #s? (i config'd Recount for current fight average like DM, ran both at the same time, and the two still gave diff #s) I want to say that WWS is more accurate than either, but again, I'm not sure.

So, I'm wondering what everyone else uses.

<At this point I also want to point out that I've concluded, after that argument over damage meters, most people are complete idiots when it comes to damage meters. I feel that most people use it as some kind of evaluation of their personal worth, whereas they should be using it as a guide for improvement. Yes, if you're a DPS class you should be up there and I can see why you want to be able to out do someone else in a raid, but to get ANGRY and accuse people of lying with their reports?! That's just absurd and they are linking too much of their own feelings to what amounts to fleeting numbers on the screen. Just my 2c>

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

Myself, and pretty much everyone in my guild uses Recount. It's at a point, with the folks I run with, if you are using anything other than recount your results are dismissed. I'm not saying one is categorically better, but Recount seems more widely accepted regardless.

Also, I agree wholeheartedly with your last statement. We have a certain guild member that spams guild chat with his 5 man results when he is on top. Fortunately he got a talking to.

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

Use Recount myself as does mst of the rest of my guild. I think I have seen somewhere where the damage meters for DPS varies and are wrong since it doesn't take into effect when you are not casting even if Dot's are ticking.

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

Recount is much less accurate I find then Recap. Recap most times will report close if not exactly the same as web stats.

Recap (Hawksy) - Addons - Curse

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

Ah see i though I had used recount a long time ago, but it was recap. I'll have to try it out.

For all of them though it's probably best if you put in your file lines to extend your log range right?

@Pernicious:

Recount is also reknowned to be a memory hog. How does Recap measure up?

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

Yeah I'm stuck with Recount right now.. I love Recap but there is one big feature keeping me from using it.. the ability to segment fights. We are currently working on 3D so it is very nice for me to be able to post DPS done on Tenebron and Shadron seperately for people to see. No way to break those out using Recap.

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

I'm currently using recount, but I may try recap just to see what it's like. None of them (WWS included) are going to agree with each other completely, due to the combat log recording system. Range is limited on recording (I think they say 200yds), but I don't personally believe the system to be accurate at all. Otherwise, two recount users should have the exact same results in a 5-man run so long as they stay within 200yds during all combat time (including killing rats, roaches, and other nonsense critters).
But any of them serve as a good guide for personal improvement.

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

I would also suggest people look at WoW Meter Online over WWS. It is much better for analysis and gives all the up time % calculations for procs and abilities.. Check it out

Re: Which Damage Meter Do You Use?

Yeah i have in my wtf/config.wtf that it's 200 yards, is that the cap or can you do more? That's a long way away though. I thought max visible range for mobs/players to show up on screen was 100.

edit: and that wow meter online is annoying to look at and figure out what's going on.
