2 considerations about rotations
Two abstract thoughts have always been on my mind, when it comes to rotations. 1) The game can radically shift from adventure to flight simulator when you have to juggle between multiple timers, meters and UIs to get a hold of the situation. I used to think "let's switch to instrumental navigation now" when starting a hard PVE fight. This is of course the heritage of D&D tabletop gaming in modern rpgs: a game made of interacting stats, numbers, sheets. The day we will be able to abandon those rigid origins while keeping the complexity intact, it will be a revolution. 2) I have the idea that mastering a videogame, is mastering its controls. The moment where you can perform all the moves correctly and speedy enough, you beat it. Hence they are like extended training sessions, pretty cumbersome too if you think of how many different actions you can perform across several games and several genres, but cannot be shared or must be re-learned every time. We talk about making affliction rotations simpler, but what binds us isn't just the sheer amount of keys to be pressed: it's having a keyboard as our whole spectrum of interactions. A distract observer might think a WOW raid is a bunch of nervous people enjoying clicking their numpad until it's dead. |

Re: 2 considerations about rotations
Nice way of thinking .. you must be in a philosophy class or something! I do think that Blizzard is keeps trying to stay in the middle of these 2. they dont want to much dexterity such as mouse targeting in the game... and they are also making the "flight sim" part somewhat easier for us locks..... But its just because players want to push themselves to "the best thier Character can be" that drives them to flightsim modus.... I mean when i am getting in some questing i dont care to much about the rotations and such.... hence the enjoyment of lore and adventure. Last edited by zix; March 13, 2009 at 05:15 AM.. |
