3.1 Tips to Maximize DPS (Destruction Warlock)

A question from me, as a destruction lock. I've noticed that on WMO that the top Warlocks are pulling off 7k DPS in almost all Ulduar fights. I find this almost impossible to do as I'm usually around 5k-6k, and I think this has more to do with play style and learning how to maximize your DPS time versus knowing your rotation/talents/glyphs. A more advanced understanding of how to play, so to speak.

So is there anything in particular you do to maximize your DPS? Do you AoE with RoF but switch to SoC if there are more than 5 mobs? Do you cast Corruption sometimes when you have to run and you're about full on mana and CoD/Conflag are both on cooldown? Where do you use your Demonic Teleports?

I'll keep this OP Updated.

Ignis
Demonic Portal
I put one at the center of the room and teleport down from Flame Jets.

Other
I put up Corruption if Teleport's down and there's no reason to Life Tap.

Razorscale

XT-002 Deconstructor

Iron Council

Kologarn
Demonic Portal
I put one where I'm DPS'ing so I can port back after running away.

Auriaya

Hodir
Other
I stay by the Mages and DPS by a Fire until I see a Lightbeam then I run to the beam. I only ever move when I get a debuff OR if I see someone with the Storm, so I can pick up the buff.

Thorim
Demonic Portal
I put a portal down and then position myself so I can portal out if the Lightning is on my side.

Other
I put Corruption and CoD on the boss as I'm jumping down.

Freya

Mimiron

General Vezax

Mimiron:

Don't life tap in P1-P3. Theres enough breaks between the phases. I also cast corruption in P2 if I have to run from the cannon... but thats not too important I guess ;)

Refresh your DoT's in P3 when the flying unit is grounded to get the 50% damage buff

@ Rutiene.

I havent really been looking at WWS of 7K kills, but again, I havent been looking that hard.

The one thing that immedialty comes to mind is how short these fights are for these guilds? In other words, how much of the fight is based around heroism uptime vs, downtime?

If the entire guild is rocking DPS, that in itself could contribute to some of these rather unusually high numbers that you are seeing. being that the fights are over and done with rather quick.

Re: Tips to Maximize DPS (Destruction Warlock)

On kologharn 10 man

, I put COD and immolate on boss and then start dps the right arm.
COD cause right arm in 10 man dies before COD tick so I put agony on it.
In 25 man I would put agony cause I think it's still a higher DPCT than incinerate.
Immolate cause it's my best DPCT spell.
I drop corruption too cause I have the 2T7 pièce so I guess it helps to put 2 corruption.

My Demonic circle is set in entry so I could manage to dps a bit more. Indeed sometimes to avoid eye focus we don't take the straightiest path and loose some times.
I wait being focused by the eye to LT while runing back in place.

Deconstructor -

I put a portal on where we're grouped up casting so I can get back faster after running with a light bomb or gravity bomb. This works both ways, you can also put a portal where you would run with the gravity bomb or light bomb if you choose.

Another tip on Thorim - before you run down the last part of the hallway to Thorim, put your pet on passive so he follows you, and after you've jumped down click between passive and defensive and he should be there next to you. (Have heard a lot of complaints of pets not making the jump, and we all know you don't have time to resummon, especially on hard mode)

Freya - Summoning portal where you normally stand to cast, so you can get back after having to run away with the charge debuff. Another option - if you're on tree duty put a portal near the water since they always love to spawn there just out of range.

Vezax - A lot have said this, downside is you have to keep replacing the location. Put a summoning portal away from the raid for when you get life leech. It should be noted, you can't do this until Vezax is engaged. It won't work before that.

Re: Tips to Maximize DPS (Destruction Warlock)

Dont know about almost every fight 7k? thats fairly innacurate.

6500 is more of a good ballpark figure.

Destro is the same as affliction if immolate has greater than your cast time left on it cast something else while you wait, gaining an incinerate hit over losing a immolate tic is always gonna be more beneficial. You should do the same thing while you wait for your cooldowns to come up for Conflag and Chaos bolt, dont ever be not casting, if theres a half second left on the cooldown, dont wait cast another incinerate.

Over the course of a long fight this is going to yield you the most dps.

3.1 Re: Tips to Maximize DPS (Destruction Warlock)

Note: I was just gonna make a quick post, then started rambling and editing. Forgive me. Here's all the tips I can think of right now. Not all of it is totally obvious.

Frankly, the locks in our guild found the problem with breaking the dps barriers is threat. The problem for us is pumping out that much dps without pulling aggro. This meant having wisdom on your cloak and if you're lucky, getting Vigilance from a protwar, and having love between your pallies so they can make macros for all the locks ( /tar Nim, /cast Hand of Salvation). We've found that maxing dps really does require some good team work. Our locks ask for Hand of Salvation over vent mid-fight when we're about 300k-400k on threat, wait for it to drop our threat whilst continuing to nuke, then shattering when we finally catch the tank again at 500k-600k. This is contingent on waiting till the tank gets 75k-100k threat to start. Throw your dots up to start, then wait for the 100k, then chain cast your *** off. All this helps, but really, it only works if you've got a really skilled tank.

Professions: Try to dump your money makers on an alt, go with something that buffs your damage, like JC/ench. Only cost me 3k to drop eng/mining and gain 77 spellpower (prismatics are changing now, watch out). This seems pretty psycho, but it's worth it if you wanna really max your dps.

Raid buffs: Are all your raid buffs covered? We try to have almost one of every spec that stacks raid buffs. Feral druids with boomkins, one of each type of shammy, one lock specced for raid buffs, arms and fury wars, scorch buff mages, making sure we've got replenishment up 100% of the time (lock, hunter, pally), etc. This makes a MASSIVE difference in dps. Although you'll be fought tooth and nail, try to get your mages to hit your locks with focus magic. They'll be pissed off like nuts at first, but if you explain that it procs off dot crits too, they'll understand that it's better for everyone if they give it to you (threaten to drop imp soul leech, that scares 'em). Mega raid buffs make all the difference. I ran a pug the other night in EoE and couldn't break 5.2k dps cause there wasn't a single elemental shaman, boomkin, or generous mage.

Stats: Are your stats appropriate? Make sure you've got your hit cap. Try the addon Dr. Damage. It will lay out in your tooltips your exact hit %, crit %, and a hundred other things you might wanna check (takes into account, all gear bonuses, talents, and buffs). I find this helps a lot keeping myself hit capped depending on whether I'm affliction spec for self heals or Mimiron P3 tanking, or destruction for pure dps. Very useful if you switch gear for more crit or more haste. Make sure you stack as much spellpower you can over every other stat save making sure you are hit capped. Drop crit and haste gems (here's hoping they buff spell penetration like they did armor penetration, finally something to put in all those blue slots they give us...). For upgrades I go by the rule that spellpower is worth more than 2x haste/crit, so if you're faced with an extra 20 SP or an extra 20 haste, go with the spellpower every time.

I hope this little rant helps. Basically, go over every aspect of your dps every now and again and try to make it as tweaked as possible. I regularly respec to add or drop imp healthstones or Curse of Agony or some other minor spell that doesn't seem that important, but a 100 dps increase is an increase. Just try not to get bogged down assuming your build is the best. Blizz always changes shit on us, and we've got to tweak like mofos to stay on top of the charts.

Seriously though, threat is the only reason I can't break 7k myself, so maybe there's something to look into there. Also, if you can pump 5-6k as affliction, try full destro, you should break 7k.

@Nimitz

thank you for sharing your thoughts. There is however one thing I don't understand when I look at your spec. You say that threat is the main limit on your DPS, yet you don't take a second point in destructive reach. A second point there would allow you to do 5% more damage before hitting your tanks threat cap. Takeing the point out of Backlash e.g. costs you 1% crit, thats some 46 crit rating or less than 50 dps loss.
Just my thoughts. Of course it would hurt on those fights where there are no threat problems, but the loss is really small.
