3.1 Damage vs DPS, please help

Hi there,

I took quite a break from the game and have just recently come back to playing and raiding full time. My gear is coming along quite nicely so I have no complaints. My issues are......

I am destruction build, with 3 points in supression. I'm completely hit capped and my plus damage is currently at 2500+. My DPS is around 2800-3200 during raids. However....my damage is quite low comparative to my dps. I have next to no haste so that may have something to do with it. My rotation on bosses is Doom, Immolate, Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt and Incinerate, rinse and repeat.

What am I doing wrong that my damage is so low. I'm around 8th or 10th in raids but my dps is about the same as those ranking much higher than me. I'm spamming everything so I don't believe there's a ton of delay between spells.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. If you want to write to me directly I'm at sillidee@gmail.com.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Re: Damage vs DPS, please help

well, this really depends on the fights you're in. Are you dying on the fights (i'm going to assume no, as you would probably know that's the problem). Also, which raid are you talking about? Can you maybe give us an example of a specific fight (prefferably something like patchwerk) and the dps you're pulling there? I'm sure your dps could also be a good bit higher if you have 2500sp. By that point your haste and crit should be ok too. Thing about destro locks is that our damage is more directly related to our dps than some other classes/speccs.

damage = dps * time spent attacking

so if you dps is fine, then you have to work on your uptime. Sorry to say, but it's as simple as that.

Try looking at some combat log reports (e.g. WWS) from your fights, they also list dps time and such, maybe you can find a problem there

not sure if it will make much difference but at the start of the fight go Immolate -> CoD -> Conf -> CB -> Incin

I 100% agree, don't lag behind the group and get on the targeted mob ASAP.

I've said this before, but I keep my meter on "overall damage", that's what I shoot for.

Wrong. First, the opening sequence will make little difference on a 5 min fight, and second, you want conflag directly after Immolate.

Re: Damage vs DPS, please help

Im the exact opposite. I tend to do very well on the damage meters but am a few places down in the dps meter. Many people always seem to gloat about how high their dps is, but then I check damage and I am out doing them there. Normally its not by much, but many times it can be upto four spaces on the meters. Very confusing. I would think that damage is the overall more important value, but dps is all that heard about.

Damage done on bossfigts is all I care about.
Total damage/dps through an instance is a nice read, but matters less.

I don't know about you, but with a high end computer and <50ms connection I still have about half a second after an Immolate till Conflagrate can be cast. This delay seems to be unavoidable. That's half a second of doing nothing where you could have casted half a CoD or 1/3 of an Incin.

Man with 2500sp, you shouldnt be worried about your total damage done but with your DPS.... 3200 is waaaay low for 2500sp... this means that unbuffed you got around 2000sp.... I myself got 2200sp unbuffed and i'm able to pull out about 4.7k DPS on a Dummie with no side buffs for a 5 mins fight. in raids you should be able to do @least 5k DPS. Start workin on this one
