3.2 Its all in the meters (why your DPS looks like crap)

Since the patch my heroic DPS looked awful on recount which sadly is what most use.

Did TOC tonight running three different Meters with three different results.

Reset the meters after the riding portion. So the DPSfor each is fromthat point on.

Recount showed 1.7K Violation showed 3.2 k and Skada shows around 2.5K DPS.

I have also noticed people that run WWS, and World of logs, etc types parser based meters showing same to slightly higher DPS.

Basically I think a lot of it is all really in the meters. Now on a single target like a training dummy these meters are a bit closer in range.

Anyways if your raid leader is QQ'ing then have them run one of the parsers types and I think you will see the dps is still there for you.

Re: Its all in the meters (why your DPS looks like crap)

Well... in the end its the damage you deal that counts. Do these numbers come out more or less correct on the meters?

Don't forget that you a) have a pet that might be attacking while you are not and b) your dots and curses continue ticking while you're not casting for some reason or the other. This might be treated differently by different meters towards your total dps time.

Who bothers with meters in 5 mans? Just get a decent ret pally in your group and let him do all the work

Being serious, Recount is a flawed addon, it hasn't had a genuine overhaul since 2.4. I take little notice of it, WoL and WMO are the best for gauging your DPS (WWS is garbage now).

I totally agree with you. I was doing the daily hc yesteday (Gundrak) and while the RL used Recount I used Skada. According to Recount i was about 1.9k dps at bossfights but according to Skada i was aboout 2.5k dps.

It's kinda annoying taking QQ about dps when it feels that it's their addons is being the ones that not works proper. I've heard several people complaining about Recount but it's still the most frequent used addon.

gonna test out skada... thanks for mentioning it. Seems to have some interesting features, including a built in threat meter

As I have understand it Skada stops counting damage and dps the moment the mob/boss dies while Recount continues to count – which lower youre dps or something like that. But that doensn't explain why just a couple of a group has higher dps in Skada and not everyone compared to Recount.

Personally I have a hard time trusting any damage- and dps-meters since it feels like all of them is showing different results. -.-

Re: Its all in the meters (why your DPS looks like crap)

I don't use different meters, it will just get me confused. Fact is you might as well use what most other people use in your raid, because it's all good telling them your meter says you did more, but are they really gonna believe you?

I dunno though, i think since recount is the most used it must be the best. I'd rather use one which is used by most people than use one which is less used and therefore maybe not as trustworthy.

Meters are annoying but a necessary evil. We use recount as a guild so everyone keeps the same platform. If it is flawed, then it flawed for everyone. DPS is all theory anyways. I find that I differnt DPS on differnt computers (yes I know te reasons why). A mjor part of DPS metering is when it starts its DPS counting. Does it start on cast or on contact. Eg, You start castngi chaos bolt, if te DPS meter starts then you loose casting time to average DPS. If it starts on contact well you can see the difference.

As an aside 3.2 patch saw my DPS go up. They really powered up the imp and I've specced every possible talent point into making it stronger from the beginning

Re: Its all in the meters (why your DPS looks like crap)

I'm curious whether all (3) meters were showing the same overall damage numbers.

Calculating start/stop times for DPS is tricky, a bit of an art, and somewhat subjective. Total damage done, OTOH, is a more objective measure.

...

The reason that folks use DPS numbers, is because they are short and easy to remember.

We always judge output based on total damage done during the fight. But that number doesn't carry over well when trying to relate our DPS potential to other warlocks. I could say that I did 2.5 million damage on Ignis, but it's not going to really tell you much.

The primary reason to use a damage tracking meter is to gauge personal performance. If you don't keep track of the damage that you do, you won't know whether you are getting better/worse at learning the fight and figuring out how to do massive damage amid the chaos.

I will rarely look at Recount mid-fight. It's very much a tool that I use after the fight to judge my personal performance.

Yeah I use recount but have it set to disappear when a fight starts and omen takes its place. Then when the fight finishes omen goes away and recount comes back so i can see how im doing. Saves screen space too.

Might try skada tho after reading this thread.
