First off, I am a lock with usually 3k spellpower in raids. I used to raid affliction, really liked it, and recently swtiched to destruction as everyone says it is better. In general, my dps as destro is only just as good or worse than when i was affliction specd. looking at the simcraft sticky on EJ, destro is only like 30 dps theoretically higher than affliction. (i am not talking about t9 gear however, as I imagine that the pet critical strike damage in combo with destro guaranteed next crit would be a huge upgrade over affliction). Why do people say that destro is better than affliction? |

Really just depends on what you and your guild requires. For instance I am usually an Affliction lock but since we have started Hard Modes I find that the burst you get from Destro for most fights is what we need as a raid. There are a few exeptions of course but all in all I tend to do more damage and dps with my Destro spec than I do with affliction these days. |

Re: Affliction vs Destruction Discussion
I was an affliction warlock through and through from level 10 to Ulduar. Once i got Ulduar geared though i began to wonder about destruction and the amount of warlocks around with this spec. So i gave it a try. I am on average doing at least 500 more dps as destruction. It's a shame, i've always fancied going demo, the one spec i haven't tried but i just don't see where it fits in my dual spec as my affliction offspec is used only for Yogg-Saron, who we clear once a week. Destruction unfortunately wins at the moment, and i hate to say it but i enjoy it a hell of alot more than affliction now. Two months ago i was very defensive about my dying spec and said the exact opposite. My DPS is more than enough for our raids, i wouldn't want to decrease it in any raids as it gets bosses down quicker. And the burst is just what i need for that. |

I have been an affliction lock from the day I first figured out what talent points were, but after I purchased the dual talents ability I thought I would give destruction a try. I will have to agree with everyone that destruction has outperformed every affliction spec I can find or build, with my current non endgame gear and an endless number of gems and enchants waisted. I finally admitted to myself, last night, after a visit to the target dummies, that I had to quit beating a dead horse and give up on my favorite spec...for now. |

Re: Affliction vs Destruction Discussion
Yea i find destro is just excellent for any fight, even Yogg to be honest. My raid leader has agreed for me to go destro for Yogg now since i can just go on adds in p3 instead of on Yogg, which may even benefit the fight. Every single other fight though destruction just wins. But early The Burning Crusade demo was THE spec, then affliction, then destruction. I wouldn't be suprised if it rotates back round by the next expansion. I'm looking forward to seeing what Blizzard do. Fortunately i'm happy to play any spec if the numbers are there. And having tried demo for the first time this morning it's nice knowing i know how to play all three. |

Destruction has way more burst damage, which is a huge benefit, especially in Ulduar where the fights have so much movement. Also, destruction does steady DPS where affliction dominates when the bosses are under 25% health. If you are wiping at all before a boss hits 25%, destruction will get a lot more DPS in. |

Re: Affliction vs Destruction Discussion
Yah, affliction needs some sort of up-front damage. - Maybe boost the damage that haunt does. It's great that it can crit now, but could still use a boost. - Change UA so that it does damage as soon as it lands (add 1 tick to the front). - Maybe the Siphon Life talent should also add a tick to the front of Corruption - Boost shadowflame damage? |

HAHA I seem to be the opposite of most posts here. I have been destruction from the time I got to 70, only changing to demo to level and to try and solo things using FG as a tank. The one spec I don't really do and didn't give a go till Wrath of the Lich King was Aff. HOWEVER after reading things and learning more about warlocks I'm actually disappointed that Aff warlocks don't have more <3. I think the EJ forums put it the best way where they call a Destruction warlock the Mage Equivalent. I just think there is more to an Affliction warlock and would like to see that become the No. 1 dps spec or for it to be really close where it wouldn't make a diff except player style and choice. I don't see that happening though the more Blizz seems to balance things the more "off" it all seems to me. O well. Guess I'm stickin with destro! |
