So I just dinged 30 and got Hellfire but I'm not finding any good uses for it in PVE. Even if I get mobbed, I doubt I'll keep taking 84 damage over 15 secs. Am I missing something here? I don't use the Imp much but I think the Imp has a fire shield effect. At my level did you guys use Hellfire much and in what situations? I like the spell effect, it looks damn cool, but I am finding it useless at the moment.

Hellfire is useful only when paired with a Voidwalker sacrifice shield, or a Priest/Pally bubble. Using some sort of bubble prevents you from taking damage from Hellfire.

This is good when you have a bunch of mobs that die quickly while in a party setting. Not so good when you solo because if your shield expires and the mobs are still alive, you tend to be in trouble.

It's other advantage is that it allows us to "kill" ourselves. Why is that good? Well if we kill ourselves, we don't take durability loss, which means less armor bills when a raid or boss fight goes poorly. Also, it lets us sneak into areas we might not otherwise be able to, such as wings of Dire Maul when we don't have the Crescent Key. You can Kill yourself, ghost run back and rez on the other side of the door.

Ghostcrawler made a comment in the Warlock Q&A (I think) where he says that Hellfire is one of those spells that lost its charm and is on the extermination block to possibly be removed from the game. We've a thread that some members have built upon developing some pretty cool ideas of how we could retool Hellfire rather than loose it as a spell.

Idea for Hell Fire

I think Hellfire is somewhat anachronistic and out of place now. It used to be one of the good AOE spells of old with the 'disadvantage' that you hurt yourself with it. As long as I had a priest or paladin shield, it was pretty nice for downing a set of AOE mobs.

Hellfire has a much higher base damage than Rain of Fire, but at level 80 quickly becomes outstripped in utility because rain of fire crits, hellfire doesn't. And Rain of Fire has a much higher spell power coefficient which means it essentially scales better. Rain of Fire ticks once every 2 seconds with 4x spell power coefficient per tick and Hellfire ticks every second. So effectively spell power improves rain of fire's punch about 2x what it does for hellfire. And actually more when you consider crit modifies rain of fire as well.

Re: Hellfire at Level 30

I use Hellfire only when our raid is about to wipe. Life Tap as much as you can and then kill yourself by Hellfire -> no durability loss ;)
But I never used it in other situations in PvE nor PvP...

Re: Hellfire at Level 30

I want to add that Hellfire does have one edge over Rain of Fire in that you get less over all push back from Hellfire than Rain of Fire. So if you cast the AoE while mobs are hitting you, you'll be recasting Rain of Fire more often than you will Hellfire meaning it is more Mana Efficient in those situations than Rain of Fire is.

When surrounded by trash that goes down quickly (eg, chow), the faster ticks of hellfire mean that you actually contribute to their deaths for WWS purposes, etc.

It also looks cool =P

Re: Hellfire at Level 30

when you get to higher levels go into stocks with a VW bubble on, round up a few rooms of mobs, then hellfire, it's great, little glimmering circles of corpes around you :-)

Re: Hellfire at Level 30

I would like to add that I tend to dot up adds in an aoe pull and run in and hellfire to pull aggro off my tank mates just for shits and giggles, it's more a fun spell than a practical one.

Re: Hellfire at Level 30

It was a quite nice spell back at 60 indeed. Still remember that one time when I went with a pug to strat living and the tank had to go afk. As we werent very far we still had those huge undead mob packs ahead of us. At some point someone had that great idea that I actually go in and basically "tank-kill" them all. So basically we ended up taking quite afew of those packs down with me hellfiring and a resto druid and enhancement shaman spamm healing me. One of the most fun runs I have ever had.
