Fire Protection Potions

Just as a suggestion on how to make Hellfire much safer and easier to use, talk to an alchemist and get either:

Fire Protection Potion
Use: Absorbs 975 to 1625 fire damage. Lasts 1 hour.

or

Greater Fire Protection Potion
Use: Absorbs 1950 to 3250 fire damage. Lasts 1 hour

A few notes:

1) Any alchemist over 165 skill should be able to make Fire Protection Potions. It's purchased from either of these two:
Jeeda - <Apprentice Witch Doctor>: Stonetalon Mountains (Horde)
Nandar Branson - <Alchemy Supplies>: Hillsbrad Foothills (Alliance)

2) Anyone can collect all of the components for Fire Protection. It does require fishing, though not much skill. The other component is dropped from Whelps. In my experience the Scalding Whelps (level 41-43) in Badlands are the best source. For a stack of 5 you need to collect these items:

10xFirefin Snapper - fishing (Menethil and Booty Bay are good spots)
5xSmall Flame Sacs (whelps)
5xEmpty Vials (purchased)
5xLeaded Vials (purchased)

If you bring these to an alchemist most would probably combine for free.

3) Greater Fire Protection Potions are more difficult to come by. They require 5xelemental fire (drop from fire elementals), 5xdreamfoil (herbalism), and 5xCrystal Vials (purchased) for 5 potions. These will probably cost you since you'll probably be using the alchemist's dreamfoil at the least. Also, the recipe is rare drop in Blackrock Spire, so don't expect to find many alchemists with this recipe yet.

4) If you stack this with Sacrifice there is something to be aware of. Sacrifice is an "umbrella" absorb. Since it absorbs all damage, it will absorb the first X damage that you take. So if you use Sacrifice and these potions, the potion will absorb nothing until you Sacrifice is gone. This means you're best waiting to Sacrifice your VW till you actually get agro, that way it'll absorb a round or two of hits, plus some Hellfire damage, before you lose it and get interrupted. Before you get agro the potion will cover any damage that would have been taken from Hellfire.

Hope this helps.

Hellfire vs RoF

Well your Hellfire is actually more damage still. Hellfire hits every second, while Rain of Fire is every 2 seconds. You can cast RoF twice (pretty much) during the duration of a single Hellfire, and Hellfire will still do more damage. However, RoF has uses too. First of all it's safe to use and generates agro slower than Hellfire. It's also ranged, which gives it distinct advantages in mass PvP. While running back to your corpse, springing to life in the middle of battle, and throwing up a Hellfire is certainly fun, it attracts attention quickly. RoF on the other hand can be used at a distance, so if you're pelting your enemies from off to the side, one or more of them has to find you in order to shut you down.

One thing someone touched on earlier that I have a question about: AE's and crits. I've used my AE's a ton and never noticed any crits (I'm not crit specc'd but I still have a base chance). Of course there's a lot of spam, so it would be easy to miss. If anyone could confirm whether or not AE's can get crits, I would appreciate it.

I've never had an AE crit so I don't think it's possible. Wether or not that's by design or it's a bug I don't know.

Hellfire -- umm, I must be missing a crucial point somewhere

Had lots of fun playing with Hellfire in SM last night. Either priest shield, sac, or sometimes just a renew spell and we were just pulling and hellfiring. At one point after we killed Herod and all the monks came in I hit 987 dps.

Damn that was fun!

Hellfire -- umm, I must be missing a crucial point somewhere

i just picked up a Blazing Emblem off a basilisk in tanaris. i'm going to group with a paladin and test fire resistance with hellfire. if anything it reduces the damage i take per tick from 139 to 114 (rank 2). overall i save myself 250 damage. not much but everything helps.

I was the hero in Uldaman with this spell. Using Soul Link, I handedly dispatched the scorpion and trogg ambushes with tons of life to spare. It's terrible in PvE though, as Demonic Sacrifice->Rain of Fire is most definately supreme.

How is that? If you're going to sac a pet, sac the VW for shield and Hellfire. Rain of Fire is numerically inferior.

I think Freemantle meant in PvP. I'd agree with him in that case. Since RoF is ranged, you can use Demonic Sacrifice on an Imp, and hide and use RoF. If you use Hellfire in PvP, you're guaranteed to get shut down as soon as people start to see those waves of fire coming out of you.

For PvE I'd still rather Sacrifice an Imp for extra Hellfire damage and save the VW shield for incase I get agro. With the potions I mentioned above, there's not much need for any other damage mitigation for Hellfire.
