Raiding: change spec and gems or ok destro?

yes, and working on getting several gear upgrades. I was using the suggestion "If you are not hit capped, the best way to gem is by putting pure spell hit gems into sockets in this order of preference." to gem up but have received other suggestions.

Items/Slots in need of immediate upgrade:

Mostly I focus on badge, pvp, or crafted gear since even though I'm in kara or gruuls I lose pretty much all random rolls.

Spellstrike hood in a week or so.
Want to go 1h + off hand but either need lots of badges or decent luck

In general as I get an item with spell hit, I switch the gem to spell damage or haste or crit.

All about you:
I am in a guild that is casually raiding. We have kara mostly on farm, and have started dropping Gruul and working on Mags. In kara I tend to be top DPS and damage even with slowing down to watch aggro. In Gruuls, I'm in top 3 DPS and damage and those above me are either in more advance guilds or came from a more advance one. This is focusing on results from the boss, not trash. Oh when I was affliction I was also top damage in kara but mid DPS so.

The question I have is in two of the WWS threads I posted it was suggested changing gems and spec would be better for my current set of equipment and that using all my sockets for spell hit is not the best use so changing them to damage and affliction would give me a boost.

When I use the spreadsheet changing my spec and gems lowers my DPS by about 20 DPS. So maybe I'm not using the sheet exactly right?

I share this experience that someone posted in the aff vs destro thread "I kept hesitating to make the switch since my stats didn't measure up to the numbers I had read (I saw +1200 damage and 20-25% crit). I went from 41/0/20 to 0/21/40 and saw an immediate 300 DPS jump. I went from watching 4 different DOT/Curse timers to Corruption/Curse and Shadow Bolt spam."

Perhaps I was just a bad affliction lock?

I am tempted to switch things around for next weeks Gruul and see the numbers myself but wnated to get some suggestions thoughts?

PS.. hope I'm in the right area for this
