Possible future of firestone and spellstone?

Someone on the ej forums spotted new versions of firestone and spellstone on wowhead.

Nothing's certain since they're not implemented yet, but at this stage it looks like the idea is to have them work like weapon oils.

It's not clear from the description whether only the warlock's own weapons can be enhanced.

A big question mark hangs over the self-dispel aspect of the spellstone. The new spellstone doesn't have it, and it couldn't work in the spellstone's new form. But whether it will become a new spell, get added to an existing one, or if it is simply gone is anyone's guess.

And of course there's no guarantee this will be implemented in beta, let alone make it to live. But I for one take encouragement from the fact that the devs are aware of the problem with these stones currently and are also willing to make drastic changes to these stones to make them more useful.

I really have no idea what they could have possibly been thinking when they made the original firestone spell. It's about time they either fixed/removed it.

I like. Only gripe is the haste on the affliction styled one, wouldn't spell damage be a better choice?

If those are the new versions, then that is looking a little interesting.

Now it remains to be seen which would be better... the stone or the wand.

And with the new wands that I can create with enchanting it will be interesting to see which is the best

Choices are nice.

Re: Possible future of firestone and spellstone?

I don't think you equip these any more, so you can have the stone and a wand.

Instead, the choice would be between a stone and a wizard (or mana) oil.

Re: Possible future of firestone and spellstone?

Good to see some necessary changes to these currently pointless abilities. We're currently going for Archimonde and I thought a Spellstone might be useful for removing the Doomfire DoT or Grip of the Legion but it doesn't work on curses and apparently it's no good for the Doomfire DoT either - so it remains as useless as ever to me. We'll have to see what the new Wizard Oil is like but atm a 1% damage increase on the Firestone (which would add up to around +13 damage to me) plus an extra 2% crit chance (at level 70) doesn't seem that impressive. 60 haste on the spellstone is nice though. We'll have to see how these are tweaked for the final as we obviously don't know what a reasonable amount of +damage will be at Wrath of the Lich King end game.

Re: Possible future of firestone and spellstone?

I think they are great these new uses for spell and firestone, the old ones i think only once i ever used a firestone and spellstones only when i dueled shadowpriests maybe 3 times when i remembered to bother with making them BEFORE the duel.

The description of the spell details says that it is has 0 range (self) so i think it is something that we wont be applying to other raid or party members, and if we end up being able to apply it to others i hope we get some kind of ritual of souls.

Just imagine doing spellstones and firestones for all casters in a raid, we wouldnt be able to bring anything but soulshard bags to a raid.

Well it is increasing damage by Periodic spells. And the spell haste is important for affliction as well, don't forget. Roughly 40% of affliction spell damage comes from Shadowbolts. Not to mention that haste now affects global cooldown which means you can cast dots faster.

I think these are fantastic changes. The only stone that held any interest for me was the spell stone for its dispell. While I'm sad to see the dispell aspect gone from these, perhaps Blizz will find some other way to give us that ability back.

Yeah, thats the conclusion I've come to. Now the big question is, are these worth using over applying wizard oil?

It doesnt have to be that large a difference, in fact if its only at par with the oils, its still viable since its free. Free is always good

Even if they are not as optimal for raiding as Oils, they will still be actually useful while leveling for sure. Also, when your geared up in T9 and going back and doing T7 to help people or for "badge runs", you can use them instead of spending money on Oils.

As others have said, at least they are putting some use into otherwise useless abilities.
