No Flying Mounts in Dalaran

WoW Forums - Flying in Dalaran

For the time being, it is intended that you cannot fly within the city of Dalaran. We want you to be able to fly into Dalaran and fly out of Dalaran (via mounting at the flying landing or in the sewer pipe) but we don't want people flying around the city streets. We do want people to be able to mount on their ground mounts in the city (but not indoors).

This isn't entirely set up properly yet and not all things are working. Most of this will be implemented over the coming weeks. If it's horrible, we'll change it. But that's what we're trying out right now.

A big complaint of Shattrath was that it did not feel like a city. A goal of Dalaran was to re-capture the bustling street feel of places like Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Flying mounts work contrary to this goal.

Re: No Flying Mounts in Dalaran

I would agree that Shattrath does not feel like a city. Some of that may be due to the flying mounts, but personally I feel that most of it has to do with the fact that the main level has a couple of banks, a flightmaster, and not much else. I see Shat as more of a hub for me to utilize on my way to somewhere else. I don't get that feeling in Stormwind, Ironforge, The Undercity, etc....; they seem more like actual cities. The layout has more to do with a "city feel" than allowing people to fly around the place, although I am sure that has something to do with it as well.

It doesn't really look like a city either. I try to stay out of shat at all costs if i can help it. I'd much rather hang out in stormwind.

Re: No Flying Mounts in Dalaran

I do think flying mounts is part of the reason, but the real reason is the design - it doesn't feel like a city because nobody lives there!

The only non-vendor, non-military inhabitants are all refugees in Lower City.

I agree on the first two, but the Undercity? I'm sorry, but I don't think this can be called a city. There is no housing at all in there.

I like this change though, and I hope they keep it this way.

Me too. Besides all those reasons, my Mac can't stand all that lag.

Re: No Flying Mounts in Dalaran

I like the fact that Dalaran has an instance in it. Or it did the last time I checked... It makes it more like a real city because it has a skeleton in the proverbial closet. Like Stormwind. But I agree on the no-flying-mounts thing. There should be a few platforms outside the main metropolis of the city where people can land, but they shouldn't be allowed to fly around in Dalaran. One of Shattrath's problems is that there is no order. People don't follow the paths that were meticulously laid down by the programmers. Sure, there are elevators and gates but why use an elevator when you can fly? And what's the point of a door when you can just fly out of the top of the building?

Re: No Flying Mounts in Dalaran

I think the real reason a city feels like a city is not because of people, places like Thunderbluff and Darnassus are perfect examples of a good city, but little population due to remoteness.

But a good city in my eyes is a one-stop shop for pretty much everything. Whether it be a hair cut, to train, trade, AH, bank, BG, etc...
