A Romagoth Story - Chapter 7: The Burning Steppes

Having heard about the so-called “Dreadsteed” from other warlocks, Romagoth knew this was a horse he had to have. After all, it was a rite of passage for most warlocks, much like obtaining your first demon and finding the courage to tell your family about your career choice (who says a career of dark magic, demon pets, and killing monsters doesn’t have a place in modern society?). Thus, Romagoth was in a hurry to find out how to obtain this new horse, and he felt that anything else right now was a complete waste of his time.

The door to The Slaughtered Lamb opened slowly as he knocked, and upon entering the bar area Romagoth noticed that the normal bartender was not working tonight. Descending the stairs at the rear of the room, he also felt a little chill in the air, as if someone had forgot to close the door. Glancing behind him, Romagoth realized he had indeed forgot to close the door behind him. “No, no…I’ll get that for you. No need to do anymore than is absolutely necessary.” quipped the bartender with a scowl. “My apologies, sir.” said Romagoth with a malicious grin. “Ummm…err.., no, that’s ok. My mistake.” said the obviously shaken barkeep, as he closed the door. Smiling to himself, Romagoth continued into the decrepit basement, silently wondering when the last time this place was cleaned.

“Welcome, Romagoth!!” said the trainer. “Sorry to do this, but I am going to need to send you off to Ironforge now to speak with the Demon Trainer there. Goes by the name of Jubahl Corpseseeker. He has some important business to discuss with you.” she said, obviously distracted by the Imp standing nearby, muttering things in Daemonic. “Run along, now, quickly lest Jubahl become upset with your dallying”.

With a deep sigh, Romagoth turned around and went back up the stairs. He really hated how people would send him places just to be sent somewhere else, usually with a reward of near nothing. In fact, often times it cost more to travel somewhere than what the reward ended up being. Never mind the cost of food, bandages, a room, and dental work. Sighing again, Romagoth stepped outside and headed towards the Deeprun Tram. The Deeprun Tram was a fantastic invention by the Dwarves that connects Ironforge with Stormwind. Romagoth fondly remembered all of the trips he took between the two cities and how much time it saved him.

Stepping into the waiting area for the Tram almost cost Romagoth his life. From nowhere a blood elf rogue stabbed him, and if not for a quick reflex, Romagoth would be dead. Instead, the sharp blade missed his throat by a hair and the rogue was briefly off-balance. Pushing the rogue away from himself, Romagoth cast a fear spell and sent the rogue running away. Romagoth then ordered Haatom, his felguard, to intercept the rogue upon his return. Romagoth also placed a corruption and curse of agony on the rogue, forcing the rogue to use his cloak of shadows. This removed the spells from him, but did not stop the intercept from Haatom. Momentarily stunned, the rogue could do nothing while Haatom attacked him with a giant battle axe. Breaking from the stun, the rogue immediately vanished and ran away to heal. Knowing the rogue would be back shortly, Romagoth decided it was best to get on the Tram and head out. It was not uncommon to see the occasional horde in an alliance city, especially those of the rogue persuasion. However, it WAS uncommon to see one run away as quickly as this one did.

The Tram arrived in Ironforge without further incident, and Romagoth went to see Jubahl Corpseseeker. “This must be important if you need to see me personally.” said Romagoth upon arriving in Jubahl’s store. “Yes, Romagoth, it is important. Let me get right to the point. Have you ever heard of the famous warlock horse, the “Dreadsteed”? asked Jubahl. Romagoth, suddenly very interested, responded with a guarded “yes”. “Well, I have found a method for which you may be able to obtain one for yourself. Of course, there are steps to be taken in this process, but I am sure you are fully capable of this.” said Jubahl.

“First, you must travel to the Burning Steppes and speak with Mor'zul Bloodbringer. He will outline the necessary steps of the process, up to and including the final summoning process in the forbidden stronghold of Dire Maul.” said Jubahl.

“Ummm, what? Did you just mention Dire Maul?” asked Romagoth. The thought of that place made his skin crawl. He had only been there once before, and if not for his felguard’s skill at cleaving, Romagoth would probably be missing an arm.

“Yes, Dire Maul. It is there that you will ultimately need to travel in order to obtain this prized mount. Are you familiar with the place, Romagoth?” asked Jubahl.

“Yes, I am familiar with Dire Maul. I was really hoping that I would never have to go there again, actually.” replied Romagoth. “Just another challenge in the life of a warlock” he said, walking out the door.

Romagoth took the Grypon to the Burning Steppes to seek out this Mor'zul Bloodbringer person, whoever he was…
