Warlock Talents F.A.Q.
Upon reaching level ten (10), you begin earning talent points at the rate of one per level. Talent points allow you to personalise your character to suit your play style and are spent via the talents window (press N). Talent points can be spent to purchase talents, which can do a variety of things. Many talents can improve your class' existing abilities, give you new abilities, or improve your class skills. All classes have the same talent options, but no single character can hope to acquire every single talent. Thus, there are many talent choices open to your character, and your choices will help differentiate you from other players playing the same class.
The following information will give you a basic understanding of the WoW Talent system. Once you understand how talents work, please see the "further reading" section down the bottom for Warlock specific assistance.
What are Talents? Talents are a way to improve our class skills and abilities as well as grant entirely new abilities to our arsenal. Talents give you another way to customize your character to your specific play style as well as differentiate yourself from other players of the same class.
How do I get Talent Points? From level 10 onwards, every time your character gains a level they are awarded one (1) Talent point. Note: At level one, a character starts with zero Talent points. As a result, a level 70 character will obtain a total of 61 Talent points.
How do I spend Talent points? Once you reach level 10, open the Talents interface by pressing N, or by using the Talents button located on the game provided hotkeys. A window will open with three tabs, Affliction, Destruction and Demonology. Left clicking on the tab names will show the associated Talent Tree. Mousing over each of the choices will show a tooltip providing information on that Talent. Once you have decided which Talent you want, left click to spend your point.
Warning: There is no confirmation of your pick. Once you click on it, you buy it.
Why can't I obtain a Talent I want? Some talent lines require you to meet certain pre-requisites before you can obtain it. Any prerequisites that are not being met will appear in red letters inside the tool tip when you mouse over the icon for the ability you wish to purchase. Also, make sure you have the appropriate amount of available Talent points required to purchase the ability as well.
Where can I find out how many unused Talent points I have? Open the Talent interface by using the Talents button. The amount of unused Talent points can be found at the bottom of the window.
Can I unlearn Talents? Players are able to unlearn Talents by visiting their class trainer. It costs you money to do this and the amount increases each time you do it. When you reset your Talents, you unlearn everything at once. If you have purchased Talents that give you a spell, you will lose any upgrades to this spell from your spell book and will have to repurchase them each time you retake that ability.
Felguard note: When you reset your talents, you will lose the option to summon the Felguard, however, you do not lose any abilities (Grimoires) you have already purchased and memorised. If you ever return to the Felguard, he will still have these abilities.
How much does it cost to reset? The first time you reset your talents it will cost you 1 gold, the next will cost you 5 gold followed by 10 gold for the third. It goes up by 5 gold each time you reset until you hit the maximum cost of 50g. The cost of this does decrease over time, at a rate of 5g for every month you don't respec, down to a minimum of 15g.
What is the best Talent? This is a very common question, and really there is no right answer. All Warlocks play differently, and it all depends on your own play style.
What is the best build for Leveling, PvP, PvE, etc? Again, another extremely common question, and again with the same answer; it all comes down to personal preference. There is no best or right build for either PvE or PvP, it all comes down to your play style and what suits you. The best advice anyone can give you, is to try out a few things, eventually you will discover your playing style and the talents or build to best match you.
Now that you have a basic understanding of how the World of Warcraft talent system works, feel free to read over some of the following pages to better understand the ins and outs of our Warlock talents trees.
